“Let’s protect Wales’ most venerable ancient trees”, says new AM

Ken Skates meets up with the Woodland Trust under the ancient boughs of Plas Power Wood

Newly elected Clwyd South AM Ken Skates met up with the Woodland Trust (Coed Cadw) today to discuss how to take forward the Trust’s campaign to provide proper protection for some of Wales’ most ancient and venerable ancient trees.

The Woodland Trust plans to launch a campaign this autumn to provide proper protection of Wales’ ancient trees. There have been a number of cases of veteran and mature trees being felled in Wales in Wales in recent years due to loopholes in the Tree Preservation Order system, which predates devolution.

Ken Skates says: “The Clwyd South constituency, which I am proud to represent in the National Assembly, includes a significant concentration of ancient and veteran trees, around Chirk and Pontfadog. To me, these are an hugely important part of Wales natural heritage, as important in their own way as Caernarfon Castle or St David’s Cathedral. I’m keen to see the Assembly use its new powers to ensure that this wonderful part of our heritage is protected.”

“Beth am ddiogelu coed hynafol Cymru”, dywed Aelod newydd o’r Cynulliad

Mae Ken Skates, sydd newydd ei ethol fel Aelod Cynulliad ar gyfer De Clwyd, wedi cyfarfod â Choed Cadw heddiw i drafod sut i ddatblygu ymgyrch y mudiad i warchod coed hynafol Cymru’n fwy effeithiol.

Mae Coed Cadw’n bwriadu lansio ymgyrch yr hydref yma i ddiogelu coed hynafol yn well. Mae yna nifer o achosion lle mae coed hynafol ac aeddfed wedi cael eu cwympo yng Nghymru oherwydd gwendidau yn y drefn Gorchmynion Gwarchod Coed, a basiwyd gan Senedd Llundain cyn dyfodiad datganoli.

Dywed Ken Skates: “Mae’n fraint i gynrychioli etholaeth De Clwyd yn y Cynulliad, etholaeth sy’n cynnwys clwstwr nodedig o goed hynafol ac aeddfed, o gwmpas pentrefi’r Waun a Phontfadog. I fi, mae’r rhain yn rhan bwysig o etifeddiaeth naturiol Cymru, mor bwysig yn eu ffordd eu hun â Chastell Caernarfon neu Eglwys Gadeiriol Ty Ddewi. Dwi’n awyddus i weld y Cynulliad yn defnyddio ei bwerau newydd i sicrhau fod y rhan fendigedig hon o dreftadaeth Cymru’n cael ei ddiogelu.”

Coed Cadw (The Woodland Trust)

The Woodland Trust is the UK’s leading charity championing native woods and trees. It has 300,000 members and supporters. The Trust has three key aims: i) to enable the creation of more native woods and places rich in trees; ii) to protect native woods, trees and their wildlife for the future and; iii) to inspire everyone to enjoy and value woods and trees.

Established in 1972, the Woodland Trust now has over 1,000 sites in its care covering approximately 20,000 hectares (50,000 acres). These include over 100 sites in Wales, with a total area of 1,580 hectares (3,900 acres). It offers free public access to nearly all of its sites. The Trust’s Welsh language name, “Coed Cadw”, is an old Welsh term, used in medieval laws to describe protected or preserved woodland.
