Kate Humble gets planting

As part of a national tree planting challenge that should see 1,000,000 trees planted in a single month

With the help of 21 willing volunteers, wildlife and science TV presenter Kate Humble is planting 840 Jubilee trees to create a 200 metre hedge at her farm in the Wye valley this February. Supplied by the Trust's popular community tree pack programme, the trees are some of the first Jubilee trees to go in the ground this month and have set the Woodland Trust (Coed Cadw) on their way to their target of planting one million trees in February for the Jubilee - the start of a year of action which should see 6 million trees planted in all.

Kate said: “Trees provide food, nesting sites and habitat for countless species. They protect the landscape, feed the soil. They provide us with fuel, food and a resource which can be used for everything from paper to building our houses. They allow our earth to breathe. Together with the wonderful volunteers and staff from the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), I'm going to dig a hole and plant a future. Why don't you join us?”.

These trees will provide shelter and encourage wildlife for many years to come, and are an investment in the future. This positive foresight is also to be found just down the road where the aptly named Jubilee Road was planted to celebrate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. These trees have inspired Miss Betty Richards, 88, a passionate tree lover and a member of a local farming family. She has plans to create a Jubilee Wood in the autumn and has already planted three Royal oak trees (grown from acorns collected at Sandringham) on her land with the help of the Woodland Trust.

Elsewhere in Monmouthsire, Brian and Alison Willott have created a Jubilee Wood and crowned it with a Royal oak in the vicinity of a mature oak that was planted in 1911 to commemorate the coronation of King George V. Just three wonderful ways in which people are being One in a Million in February 2012.

This tree planting in the Wye Valley is just part of a major tree planting challenge that should see one million trees planted around the UK. In Wales alone, schools and community groups will be planting over 32,000 thousand native trees. 298 Welsh schools will be planting packs of 60 trees, while 50 community groups will plant packs of either 105 or 420 trees.

Moreover, across Wales, landowners have also pledged to plant trees to help the Trust and its Jubilee Woods project. Two Diamond Woods are being be planted, each of around 60 acres, at Ffos Las Racecourse in Carmarthenshire and the Bluestone National Park Resort in Pembrokeshire and there will be other smaller Jubilee Woods created across the country. At Ffos Las and Bluestone, there will be schools planting weeks, where local schools are invited to bring children along to tree planting sessions.

And it’s not too late for landowners to get involved. The Woodland Trust will still be keen to hear from landowners who want to create Diamond or Jubilee Woods, especially in Mid or North Wales.

Funded by IKEA, the world’s leading home furnishing retailer free Jubilee tree packs are also available for communities and schools to plant in local areas and school grounds. For individuals there is a special range of individual Jubilee trees for gardens or pots. Kate Humble yn cloddio ar gyfer y Jiwbilî ym mis Chwefror

Fel rhan o sialens blannu coed genedlaethol i blannu 1,000,000 coed y mis yma

Gyda chymorth 21 wirfoddolwyr brwdfrydig, mae Kate Humble, y cyflwynydd teledu bywyd gwyllt a gwyddoniaeth yn plannu coed 840 ar gyfer y Jiwbilî ym mis Chwefror, i greu perth 200 metr ar ei fferm yn nyffryn Gwy. Mae’r coed wedi cael eu darparu gan Goed Cadw (the Woodland Trust), fel pecyn coed cymunedol. Y rhain fydd rhai o’r coed Jiwbilî cyntaf a gaiff eu plannu'r mis hwn ac fe fyddan nhw’n helpu Coed Cadw i gyrraedd eu targed o blannu miliwn o goed ym mis Chwefror ar gyfer y Jiwbilî - ar ddechrau blwyddyn o blannu pan gaiff 6 miliwn o goed eu plannu yn gyfan gwbl.

Meddai Kate: "Mae coed yn darparu bwyd, safleoedd nythu a chynefinoedd ar gyfer rhywogaethau di-ri. Maen nhw’n gwarchod y tirwedd ac yn bwydo’r pridd. Maen nhw’n rhoi bwyd a thanwydd i ni, ynghyd ag adnodd y gellir ei defnyddio ar gyfer popeth o wneud papur i adeiladu tai. Maen nhw’n helpu’r ddaear i anadlu. Ynghyd â gwirfoddolwyr gwych a staff o Ardal Harddwch Naturiol Eithriadol Dyffryn Gwy, dwi'n mynd i wneud twll a phlannu ar gyfer y dyfodol. Beth am ymuno â ni? ".

Fe fydd y coed a blannir yn darparu cysgod ac yn denu bywyd gwyllt am flynyddoedd i ddod, ac maen nhw’n fuddsoddiad yn y dyfodol. Mae’r un agwedd gadarnhaol i’w gweld i lawr y ffordd lle plannwyd coed ar hyd “Ffordd Jiwbilî” i ddathlu Jiwbilî Ddeimwnt y Frenhines Victoria. Mae’r rhain wedi ysbrydoli Miss Betty Richards, 88, sydd yn gwirioni ar goed ac yn aelod o deulu ffermio lleol. Mae hi’n bwriadu creu coedlan Jiwbilî yn yr hydref ac mae hi wedi plannu tair derwen Frenhinol yn barod (a dyfwyd o fes a gasglwyd yn Sandringham) ar ei thir hi gyda chymorth o Goed Cadw.

Hefyd yn Sir Trefynwy, mae Brian ac Alison Willott wedi creu coedlan Jiwbilî, gyda derwen Frenhinol, yng nghyffiniau derwen aeddfed a blannwyd ym 1911 i goffáu coroni'r Brenin Siôr V. Dyma dair ffordd hyfryd i bobl gymryd rhan ym mhrosiect Coedydd y Jiwbilî ym mis Chwefror eleni.

Mae’r plannu yma yn Nyffryn Gwy yn rhan o sialens fawr i blannu miliwn o goed o amgylch y DU. Yng Nghymru yn unig, bydd ysgolion a grwpiau cymunedol yn plannu dros 32,000 mil o goed brodorol. Bydd 298 o ysgolion Cymru yn plannu pecynnau o 60 o goed, a gwnaiff 50 o grwpiau cymunedol blannu pecynnau o naill ai 105 neu 420 o goed.

Ar ben hynny, ar draws Cymru, mae tirfeddianwyr hefyd wedi ymrwymo i blannu coed i helpu Coed Cadw gyda phrosiect Coedydd y Jiwbilî. Mae dwy Goedwig Ddeimwnt yn cael eu plannu, pob un o dua 60 acer, yng Nghae Rasio Ffos Las yn Sir Gaerfyrddin ac ym Mhentref Gwyliau’r Garreg Las yn Sir Benfro. Ac fe gaiff coedlannau Jiwbilî, llai eu creu ar draws y wlad. Yn Ffos Las a’r Garreg Las, cynhelir wythnosau plannu arbennig ar gyfer ysgolion, lle mae plant o ysgolion lleol yn cael eu gwahodd i ddod draw i sesiynau plannu.

Ac nid yw'n rhy hwyr i dirfeddianwyr gymryd rhan. Mae Coed Cadw yn dal yn awyddus i glywed gan dirfeddianwyr sydd eisiau creu coedlannau Diemwnt neu Jiwbilî, yn enwedig yn y Canolbarth neu Ogledd Cymru.

Wedi'i ariannu gan IKEA, manwerthwr dodrefn mwya’r byd, mae’r pecynnau coed am ddim ar gael i gymunedau ac ysgolion hefyd, i’w plannu yn rhywle, gan gynnwys ar dir ysgolion. Ar gyfer unigolion mae amrywiaeth arbennig o goed Jiwbilî unigol ar gyfer gerddi neu botiau. Am fwy o wybodaeth neu i gael gwybod sut y gallwch gymryd rhan a phlannu’ch coeden ar gyfer y Jiwbilî ym mis Chwefror 2012, ewch i wefan www.jubileewoods.org.uk.

Jubilee Woods project www.jubileewoods.org.uk

The Trust is offering people the gem of a chance to be at the heart of the Queen's 2012 Diamond Jubilee celebrations, by planting trees for The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

The project aims to plant six million trees to celebrate The Queen’s reign and involve millions of people. The Woodland Trust is honoured to have support from the Queen as we pay tribute to her Majesty's 60-year reign by planting millions of native trees in the UK. We are delighted to have HRH The Princess Royal as patron of the project.

The project will see 60 Diamond Woods – Woods of over 60 acres being created across the UK

  • 100s of Jubilee Woods - Woods of over an acre
  • 1000s of FREE community tree packs containing 105 or 420 native tree species, these packs come in four themes, each containing a ‘royal oak’ sapling grown from acorns collected on Royal estates. Packs can be now ordered for planting in autumn 2012 (closing date September).
  • 1000s of FREE school packs containing 60 hedge or copse tree species, each containing a ‘royal oak’ sapling grown from acorns collected on Royal estates. Schools packs can be ordered for planting in autumn 2012.

Coed Cadw (The Woodland Trust)

The Woodland Trust is the UK’s leading charity championing native woods and trees. It has 300,000 members and supporters. The Trust has three key aims: i) to enable the creation of more native woods and places rich in trees; ii) to protect native woods, trees and their wildlife for the future and; iii) to inspire everyone to enjoy and value woods and trees.

Established in 1972, the Woodland Trust now has over 1,000 sites in its care covering approximately 20,000 hectares (50,000 acres). These include over 100 sites in Wales, with a total area of 1,580 hectares (3,900 acres). It offers free public access to nearly all of its sites. The Trust’s Welsh language name, “Coed Cadw”, is an old Welsh term, used in medieval laws to describe protected or preserved woodland.
