Woodland Trust response to announcement by new ginger group “Our Forests”

Sue Holden, Chief Executive of the Woodland Trust welcomes the launch of ‘Our Forests’, commenting:

“We welcome today’s launch of the ‘Our Forests’ campaign. The future of the public forest estate is a very important issue.

"We hope that this new group will also support our national goal of doubling our native woodland, to increase protection for our ancient woods and improve access.

“Through our work on the Panel and campaigns such as Jubilee Woods, we have continued the fight pushing for government to formally recognise the importance of our woods.

“The public has called for more woodland, better protection and access. We need better policies for this to happen.

“Our precious ancient woods have virtually no protection and planting rates have fallen dramatically over the last 10 years. The UK’s woodland cover is one of the lowest in Europe, which is why we need this ambitious, but achievable, target. There’s everything to play for. If people mobilise like they did before, the outcome could be historic.”
